Jagjit Singh And His Early Life

Jagjit Singh is one of the most famous Ghazal singers of the modern times. In an era where the current generation is headed towards rock and hip hop music, it is refreshing to see them cherish Jagjit Singh ghazals as well. Born in Ganganagar located in Rajasthan on 8th February, 1941, the name Jagjit means the one who triumphs over the world. His father Sardar Amar Singh Dhiman was a Government official and his mother Sardarni Bachchan Kaur had a religiousfamily background. He has four sisters and two brothers and is fondly addressed as "Jeet" by his family. Check out this biography of Jagjit Singh, which captures his intriguing life history.
The maestro has all the traits of the sun sign like inventiveness, vision, imagination and innovation. Although hislate father always wanted him to pursue IAS as a career, he took immense pride in his son`s achievements in the world of music today. Jagjit Singh did his schooling from Khalsa High School at SriGanganagar. He passed his Inter in Science stream from Government college, SriGanganagar. He graduated in the Arts stream from DAV College, Jalandhar. He alsoacquired a Post Graduate Degree in history from Kurukshetra University, Haryana. His association with music goes back to his childhood days when he was twelve years old.
He first learnt under Pandit Chaganlal Sharma for two years in SriGanganagar. After which for another six years he learnt under Ustad Jamaal Khan of Sainia Gharana, under whom he learnt all forms of Indian Classical Music - Khayal, Thumri and Drupad. He always had an open mind and was ready to learn from lesser known but talented musicians throughout his college days. The Vice Chancellor of Punjab and Kurukshetra University, Late Professor Surajbhan envinced keen interest of music in him.

Jagjit Singh's Struggle, Tragedy And Albums

Jagjit Singh & Chitra

He moved to Mumbai in the year 1965 searching for better luck in the field of music. Any budding artist faces initial struggles and tribulations before finally making an indelible mark in the industry. He got assignments that were limited to performing at wedding functions and singing jingles for advertisements. Around 1970's, the world ofghazals was dominated by renowned names like Noor Jehan, Malika Pukhraj, Begum Akhtar, Talat Mahmood and Mehdi Hassan. Jagjit Singh made the efforts to come with his first album titled "The Unforgettables", which was a collection of semi-classical Indian music. The different melody and freshness in Jagjit's voice appealed to all andhe was recognized by the industry. Though he was scorned by many critics, it did not deter him from carving a nice for himself. The album sold numerous copies and was a hit with listeners.
While Jagjit Singh was still doing jingles for advertisements during the initial years, he met another singer named Chitra. They got married after a two year long courtship in the year 1969. Together, they exemplified the first successful husband-wife singing team. They both produced numerous soulful and melodic Ghazals which were enjoyed bya wider audience. Some of the popular albums of the couple were Ecstasies, A Sound Affair and Passions.
During the early 90's, they released an album named Beyond Time, which was an experimentation with different soundsand music. It conveyed a feeling that was beyond space and time and logical explanation. Sadly, around this time, their only son Vivek met with an accident and died at the young age of twenty one. It was a huge jolt for the couple and also all their fans and well wishers all over the world. After the album "Someone Somewhere", Chitra quit singing. The songs are emotionally very powerful and moving since they connect with the personal loss of the couple.
However, Jagjit Singh continued to sing and his songs have only gained more popularity with each passing day. His later albums named Hope, In Search, Insight, Mirage, Visions, Kahkashan (Galaxy), Love Is Blind, Chirag (Lamp), etc. have made him the top Ghazal singer in the country and a favorite among fans. An album with Lata Mangeshkar named "Sajda" (Offering) was a hit and sold innumerable copies. It was a classic Ghazal album. Jagjit Singh did notlimit himself to just Hindi songs and has also sung many Punjabi songs. His bubbly and vibrant Punjabi songs are very popular and are very pleasant to hear.

Jagjit Singh In Bollywood & Bhajans

Jagjit Singh has also sung many songs for Hindi movies. Popular films include Arth, Saath Saath, Premgeet, Tum Bin, Sarfarosh, Dushman and Tarkeeb. Apart from singing, Jagjit Singh composed the music of a few films too. He composed splendid music for the TV serial, 'Mirza Ghalib'. The sensitive poetry of Ghalib in Jagjit Singh's voice assumed a new meaning. It would not be out of place to say that till date if any artist has done true justice to Ghalib's immortal poetry, arguably it is Jagjit Singh. The album stands out as a magnum opus. His transition from the 90's till date has been absolutely marvelous as he has moved towards much more melodious and meaningful Ghazals. The quality of his voice has only become better.
Like a true genius, Jagjit Singh did not restrict himself to Ghazals and has also cut a few albums of Bhajans. 'Maa', 'Hare Krishna', 'Hey Ram...Hey Ram', 'Ichhabal' and also 'Man Jeetai Jagjeet' in Punjabi, put him in the league of Bhajan singers that has a restricted membership and the prominent members of which are Mukesh, Hari Om Sharan, Yesudas, Anup Jalota and Nitin Mukesh. The soothing effect, his voice has on frayed nerves has prompted psychiatrists in metros to prescribe them to stressed out souls.
In addition to cultivating his own successful career, Jagjit Singh has been involved in guiding many new talents such as Talat Aziz and Vinod Sehgal. He is also active in several philanthropic endeavors such as the Library at St.Mary's, Bombay Hospital, CRY, and ALMA, an organization whose focus is to adopt students for further education and development. Jagjit Singh currently resides in Mumbai, but does tour every 3 years or so with a talented group of Musicians from India.

LYRICS:
zindagi mein toh sabhi pyaar kiya karte hain
main to mar ke bhi meri jaan tujhe chahoonga

Tu mila hai to ehsaas hua hai mujhko
ye meri umra mohabbat ke liye thodi hai
ik zara saa ghame daura ka bhi haq hai jispar
maine wo saans bhi tere liye rakh chodi hai
tujhpe ho jaaoonga qurbaan tujhe chaoonga
main toh mar ke bhi meri jaan tujhe chahoonga

Apne jazbaat mein nagmaat rachaane ke liye
maine dhadkan ki tarah dil mein basaya hai tujhe
main tasavoor bhi judaai ka bhala kaise karoon
maine kimsat ki lakiron se churaaya hai tujhe
pyaar ka ban ke nigehbaan tujhe chahoonga
main toh mar ke bhi meri jaan tujhe chahoonga

LYRICS:
yun zindagi ki raah mein takra gaya koi
ik roshni andheron mein bikhra gaya koi

Woh haadsa woh pehli mulaakat kya kahoon
itni ajab thi soorat haalat kya kahoon
woh kehar woh gazab who jafa mujko yaad hai
woh uski berukhi ki adaa mujhko yaad hai
mittha nahin hai zehan pe yun chhaa gaya koi
yoon zindagi ki raah mein takra gaya koi

Pehle mujhe woh dekhke barham si ho gayee
fir apne hi haseen khayalon mein kho gayee
bechargi pe meri usse reham aa gaya
shaayad mere tadapne ka andaaz bhaa gaya
saanson se bhi kareeb mere aa gaya koi
yoon zindagi ki raah mein takra gaya koi

yoon usne pyaar se meri baahon ko chhoo liya
manzil ne jaise shaakh ke raahon ko choo liya
ik pal mein dil pe kaise qayamat guzar gayi
rag rag mein uske husn ki khusboo bikhar gayi
zulfon ko mere shaan pe lehraa gaya koi
yoon zindagi ki raah mein takra gaya koi

Ab is dil-e-tabaah ki haalat na poochiye
benaam aarzoo ki lazzat na poochiye
ik ajnabi tha rooh ka armaan ban gaya
ik haadsa tha pyaar ka unwaan ban gaya
manzil ka raasta mujhe dikhla gaya koi
yoon zindagi ki raah mein takra gaya koi

Pehle se maraasim na sahee fir bhi kabhi toh
rasmo rahe duniya hi nibhaane ke liye aa

Kis kis ko bataayenge judaai ka sabab hum
tu mujh se khafa hai toh zamaane ke liye aa

Ab tak dil-e-khush seham ko tujh se hain ummeedein
ye aakhri shamme bhi bujhaane ke liye aa

Rafta rafta wo meri hasti ka saamaan ho gaye
pehle jaan fir jaane jaan fir jaane jaana ho gaye

Din badin badhti gayi is husn ki raanayeeyaan
pehle gul fir gul badan fir gul badaama ho gaye

Aap toh nazdeek se nazdeek tak aate gaye
pehle dil fir dilruba fir dil ke mehmaan ho gaye

Pyaar jab hadd se badha saare takalluf mit gaye
aap se fir tum huye fir tu ka unwaan ho gaye
